Unshackle Yourself From Empath Clutter

So, what is Empath clutter, I might hear you ask? And the simple answer is anything within your environment which holds or creates stagnated energy that can bring you down. House clutter being one of the worst.

Clutter affects everyone, but as this post is written with the Empath in mind it is classed as ‘Empath Clutter’.

It’s incredible how quickly clutter builds within the home. It’s also incredible how much it affects the way we show up in the world.

How many of us hold on to things long after they’ve outlived their use? We keep old clothes for when we lose weight or in the hope they may come back into fashion one day.  We hold on to gifts we didn’t really like, but kept them to avoid hurting another’s feelings. Or we might keep old books ‘just in case’ we want to read them again.

I think it’s safe to say we’ve all been guilty of keeping things we don’t use or that have no value in our life. But hoarding, even just a bit, soon sees the home overloaded. Which is bad news on several levels. Because, just like an Empath might become overwhelmed by being around many people, we can also experience the same feelings by spending time in cluttered places.

Clutter equates to stagnated energy and is draining to the body and mind, even that which the eye cannot see.

Empaths already pick up enough energy from the people around them, the last thing we need is to be weighted down by the energy of objects.

If you have a crowded house (and I don’t mean with people) you may not realize how much it depletes your energy. An overly cluttered home leads to an overly cluttered mind and energy field.

Clutter causes sluggishness, apathy, brain fog and an uninspired mind. It can make you feel out of sorts and energetically polluted.

Empaths generally have an inbuilt loathing of clutter, whether they are aware of their gift or not, because they feel the ‘crowded energy’ dragging them down. They may unwittingly opt for an uncomplicated home decor, without too much in the way of ornaments, for the simple reason all objects hold energy.

Many years ago, I read a book by Karen Kingston called: ‘Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui. The book really resonated with me and inspired me to have a full house detox.

I decided to get rid of all the unwanted, unused and unhelpful items we had collected over the years. My husband and I ploughed through the house, room by room, and cleared tonnes of stuff (slight exaggeration, but you will be surprised how much is crammed into the smallest draw). I have never liked visual clutter, so everything we removed came from cupboards, draws and wardrobes.

It was amazing how clean, fresh and liberated we both felt afterwards.

By removing the stuff we didn’t use or need, we cleared the energetic debris held within the unused items. As an Empath, I cannot tell you how good that felt. In a way it was like an invisible weight lifted.

Where to Start

If you fancy having a home detox, the first thing you need to summon is bravery. Yes, it may sound silly to suggest being brave for a simple house-clearing, but it’s often exactly what you need. Letting anything go causes emotional discomfort.

Fear always rears its ugly head when making any changes in life.

When de-cluttering, fear likes to sit on your shoulder and whisper in your ear, telling you how much you need all those unneeded items.

To find out whether you really need something just ask this question: ‘How will this item improve my life?’ If you can’t come up with an answer (other than it won’t) it’s probably time to ditch it or give it to charity.

Hoarding is born from the fear of lack. By clearing your clutter you face this fear.

When your home is full, there is no room for anything new to come into your life. In making space, you send out a message to the universe that you are open to receive (but hopefully not to more clutter).

A word of warning: Within days of having a clear-out you will suddenly find a use for something you cleared. You may not have used the item for 5 years but your mind will find a use for it once its been disposed. This is a normal part of the de-cluttering process and it soon passes.

If you think you are particularly affected by clutter, you may also find this post beneficial.

Hope this post helps you on your Empath journey.

Until next time.

  1. I try to go through my apartment every six months. I am trying to teach my boys about decluttering. I ask them, with my help, to go through their toys, decided to keep it, throw it away or to donate it. We always feel better after we do it and end up donating a lot to goodwill. It’s a good lesson to them about giving to others, I think anyway 🙂

  2. Great article – I collect clutter and I hate it. I really want to get rid of all the stuff but I am emotionally attached to things that belonged to my mom who is no longer alive – and memories of my childhood, or my children’s stuff when they were little – I admire people who get rid of it all – I’ll work on this.

    • Good for you. When you keep working on clearing your clutter it will take you a step closer to emotional freedom.

I completely understand your emotional attachment. It is difficult, letting go, but it is so liberating.

Good luck and thanks for sharing. 🙂
