Greetings,
I hope everything is keeping wonderful in your world.
Today, I want to talk again about a hormone that many Sensitive souls desperately need more of in their lives. Because when you deeply feel the emotions, moods, and energy of others, emotional overwhelm can quickly become exhausting.
Thankfully, this powerful hormone plays an incredible role in soothing the nervous system and helping us regain emotional balance.
It is one of my many theories that an Empath’s emotional reactions to other people’s energy can work very much like an allergy.
Let me explain…
If you suffer from allergies, you’ll know that constant exposure to an allergen often creates milder, though still uncomfortable, symptoms over time. The body adapts to a degree.
But if you spend a period away from that allergen and then suddenly come back into contact with it, the reaction can feel far more intense.
And I believe this is often exactly how emotional energy affects Empaths.
When we are around people every day, we may experience what I call “milder energetic reactions.” We learn to function around certain personalities, environments, and emotional atmospheres, even if they quietly drain us.
But after taking time away from the noise of the world… after solitude, healing, rest, or emotional peace… returning to chaotic, heavy, manipulative, or emotionally overwhelming energy can feel almost unbearable.
Suddenly, the stress response becomes amplified.
Many Empaths noticed this after periods of isolation. After becoming accustomed to quieter energy, stepping back into crowded environments, emotional tension, conflict, or demanding personalities felt incredibly overstimulating.
Almost like the nervous system had become hyper-aware.
And this is where things become fascinating…
Because just as antihistamines help calm allergic reactions in the body, there appears to be a natural “energetic antihistamine” that helps soothe emotional overwhelm in Empaths.
And that powerful substance is oxytocin.
Oxytocin is often called “the love hormone,” but its effects go far beyond love and bonding. It is both a hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a huge role in emotional regulation, nervous system balance, feelings of safety, trust, calmness, and emotional connection.
Low oxytocin levels have been associated with:
• Anxiety
• Heightened emotional sensitivity
• Depression
• PTSD
• Social fear and overwhelm
• Increased stress responses
For Empaths, this is hugely important.
Studies suggest that increasing oxytocin can help reduce stress hormones, calm the nervous system, ease anxiety, and create feelings of emotional safety and serenity — exactly what many sensitive souls desperately need after absorbing too much emotional energy from the world around them.
So how can an Empath naturally increase oxytocin?
Here are some powerful, science-backed ways:
1. Aromatherapy Oils
Certain essential oils have been shown to support oxytocin production and emotional balance, especially:
• Clary Sage
• Geranium
• Chamomile
These oils can be incredibly soothing for sensitive nervous systems. I personally find them especially helpful for lifting emotional heaviness, easing anxiety, and creating a sense of inner calm after emotionally draining interactions.
Clary Sage, in particular, has a deeply balancing effect on the emotions and nervous system.
(Always ensure essential oils are 100% pure.)
2. Hot Baths & Healing Rituals
Warm temperatures and sweating have been linked to activation of oxytocin-producing areas of the brain.
This may explain why a long hot bath can feel emotionally healing for Empaths, almost like washing away absorbed energy.
One of the most restorative practices is combining:
• Warm water
• Epsom or sea salt
• Essential oils
• Healing crystals
• Silence or calming music
Clary Sage and Lavender together create a beautiful balance of emotional release and nervous system relaxation.
Adding grounding stones like Hematite or cleansing stones like Amethyst can turn a simple bath into a deeply restorative energetic reset.
For many Empaths, baths are not self-indulgence…
They are emotional maintenance.

3. Herbal Tea & Nervous System Healing
Chamomile tea is far more powerful than many realize.
This gentle medicinal herb has long been used for calming the nervous system, reducing inflammation, easing anxiety, and supporting relaxation — and research suggests it may also support oxytocin production.
I especially love combining chamomile with fresh ginger.
Ginger is highly anti-inflammatory, grounding, warming, and excellent for digestion — something many Empaths struggle with when emotionally overloaded.
Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as slowing down and mindfully drinking a warm cup of tea.
4. Nutrients That Support Emotional Balance
There are several nutrients directly connected to healthy oxytocin function, especially:
• Magnesium
• Vitamin C
• Vitamin D
Magnesium is especially important for Empaths because it supports the nervous system and helps oxytocin receptors function properly.
Without enough magnesium, the calming effects of oxytocin cannot fully activate.
Many sensitive people are unknowingly deficient in magnesium due to chronic stress, overstimulation, poor sleep, and emotional exhaustion.
Foods rich in magnesium include:
• Dark chocolate
• Avocados
• Almonds
• Bananas
• Leafy greens
Vitamin C not only supports immunity but has also been linked to oxytocin secretion and mood regulation.
Vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, is deeply connected to emotional wellbeing, which may explain why so many people struggle emotionally during darker winter months.
Even twenty minutes of sunlight a day can make a noticeable difference.
5. Sleep in Complete Darkness
Darkness is incredibly healing for the sensitive nervous system.
When we sleep in complete darkness, the body increases melatonin production — a powerful hormone linked to deep healing, anti-inflammatory effects, emotional repair, and increased oxytocin release.
Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland, often associated spiritually with the “third eye,” which many Empaths feel highly connected to.
Simple changes such as blackout curtains, reducing blue light exposure, and creating a peaceful sleep environment can profoundly affect emotional wellbeing.
6. Grounding & Reconnecting With Nature
Perhaps one of the most important practices for Empaths is grounding.
Nature has an incredible ability to regulate the nervous system, release emotional overload, and restore energetic balance.
Forest bathing, walking barefoot on the earth, sitting beside water, touching trees, or simply spending quiet time outdoors can have a deeply calming effect on the mind and body.
Empaths are not designed to stay disconnected from nature for long periods.
The nervous system begins to suffer when we do.
So, if you often feel emotionally exhausted around certain people, overwhelmed after social interaction, or highly reactive after spending time away from draining energy — you are not imagining it.
Your sensitivity is real.
And your nervous system may simply need more intentional care, grounding, and emotional recovery than others.
Protecting your energy is not weakness.
For an Empath, it is essential wellbeing.
Until next time
Diane,

Hello Diane Kathrine! I was reading this blog post, and very intrigued and interested, and it ended abruptly. No way to comment or like. But no mention of what the natural antihistamine is.
Thank you!
