5 Easy Ways to Stop Empath Overwhelm

overwhelm

Every Empath experiences overwhelm at some point, it is one of the most challenging aspects of being Sensitive.

The overwhelm endured, from taking on too much emotional energy from others can,  at times, be unbearable. It is often caused by being “peopled”. But being around crowded places or overly negative people is not the only way an Empath becomes overwhelmed.

When someone has caused them hurt, by their words or actions, or if they have had negative thoughts directed towards them, it often throws the Empath off-balance, sending them nose-diving into overload. And that is not to mention what they suffer from being in the firing line of another’s low-mood.

The more out of alignment the Empath (feeling run down, emotionally low, having unbalanced chakras and hormones, etc.) the worst they are affected by overwhelm and the longer it tends to last.

pexels-photo-262075.jpeg

Empath overwhelm affects everyone differently, some much worse than others, at different stages of life. It can lead to lethargy, apathy and mood swings, it can  trigger thoughts that keep you awake at night, and dark emotions that flatten you.

The best way to combat the impact of overwhelm is to take action as soon as you become aware of it.

The following techniques work quickly to stop Empath overwhelm in its tracks:

1. Eat a small amount of chocolate:

I say small amount because large amounts have the opposite effect (I discovered this the delicious way, by devouring too much).

Chocolate can transform and uplift your mood in an instant. Containing compounds which promote happiness, chocolate is the go-to food when you have been emotionally or energetically triggered.

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter produced by eating chocolate, known as the happy hormone. This hormone not only activates your bliss centers but it also helps prevent you from dipping into dark thoughts.

In my opinion, milk chocolate tends to work better than dark (as dark chocolate has a higher amount of caffeine). But the type you choose is something you can experiment with yourself.

Most chocolate contains refined sugar which is a big cause of depression, and inflammation, not just in Empaths but all humans. So keep chocolate just for the times when you’ve been hit by emotional overload.

Eat between 2 to 4 small squares of chocolate, washed down with a pint of cool water. The water speeds up the healing and re-balancing process.

2. Temple hold:

Place two to three fingers on either side of the temples (between the eyebrows and hairline) and hold for as long as needed.

This simple technique helps break the repetitive thoughts that are triggered from emotional pain and overwhelm.

I’m not sure why this method works but it does. (I suspect it is because it activates acupressure points and soothes the parts of the brain responsible for emotions.) It makes one feel safe and helps contain any excess ‘head energy’.

Great to do at bedtime, when emotional overwhelm turns into rampant thoughts that keep you awake. Taking some calming, conscious breaths at the same time further helps.

3. Short burst of high intensity exercise:

A mini power-walk or run, dynamic yoga moves, dance routines or skipping, etc.  helps burn off raging or uncomfortable emotions. I’m talking very doable bursts of exercise that last between 1 to 5 minutes.

Performing short bursts of high intensity exercise releases endorphins into the body, which block the pain transmission signals and produce euphoric feelings that calm the entire system.

A great exercise I use, when I have been emotionally fired-up, is the plank.

Most will have heard of the plank; it is a challenging yoga move that activates all the muscles in the body. Maintaining it for just 30 seconds is often all it takes to blast out any overwhelm or negative energy.

There is a variation of the plank to do whatever your fitness level, from beginners and beyond. You will find plenty of excellent instructional videos on YouTube to get you started.

Whatever exercise you choose, as your mini blast, make sure to do something that makes you feel uncomfortable and your muscles burn. (The saying ‘fight fire with fire’ springs to mind here).

4. Singing:

This may not be something you want to do when feeling low, but it is excellent for lifting the moods.

Sound affects you on many levels and singing raises your vibration and can stop emotional overwhelm in its tracks.

Anyone can sing, hum or chant, even whistling works. Just make sure the song you choose is uplifting and not one that stokes up painful emotional memories.  Try it and see.

5. Avoid caffeine:

Being a stimulant, caffeine will heighten any emotional overwhelm you are experiencing. You don’t always realize how caffeine worsens your emotions because the effects kick in 30 to 40 minutes after consumption.  It can make you anxious and jittery, and negative emotions are amplified. Not having caffeine will not always prevent emotional overload, but it significantly reduces the symptoms and the way it affects you.

So there you go, quick, simple techniques, taken from the book 7 Secrets of the Sensitive, that work to reduce the Empath’s overwhelm! For more similar techniques see 10 Ways to Protect Yourself.

Clear Your Empath Emotions with Tapping

tappingYou have probably heard about the emotional freedom technique (EFT), known as Tapping, but did you know it could help balance your Empath emotions?

The premise of EFT is that by tapping certain acupressure/meridian points on the face and body it releases blocked energy and suppressed emotions.

Tapping is also known to help with addictions, chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety and for calming persistent thoughts.

The concept of Tapping was derived from the Eastern medicinal systems of acupuncture and acupressure. Both of which use the body’s meridian points to aid in healing.

It is claimed that by tapping the acupressure points, with your fingertips, it activates your body’s innate healing power.

For those Empaths who dislike meditation this may be an excellent alternative!

The repetitious practice of Tapping is meditative. Any meditative practice, which stills an Empath’s busy mind and calms their emotions, is of value.

Just like meditation, Tapping is a practice one has to build to see the best results. It is said that EFT can calm, and heal, the most powerful of emotions or emotional memories, but it has to be practised regularly.

It is always beneficial for the evolving Empath to try new ways of staying in balance.  When you stay in control of your thoughts and emotions, it allows you to live happily and without restriction in your own little corner of the world. And for this reason, it is worth giving EFT a try.

Transform Your Empath Life With This One Thing

pexels-photo-356148.jpeg

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools an Empath can use for their personal growth.  It strengthens the mind, body and spirit and builds a powerful shield of protection against the energy of others. But that’s not all…

Meditation also opens up the Empath’s intuition like nothing else.

Strong intuition requires clean thinking. And this is where meditation comes in. When you have clarity of thought and a lucid mind, magical things happen.

pexels-photo-372281.jpeg

Not only does meditation build intuition it also reprogrammes the brain into being able to better deal with negativity. This enables you to deal with the onslaught of thoughts, energy and emotions picked up from others.

Negative energy picked up from others can activate negative thoughts in your mind. Negative thoughts create stress within the body which is destructive to health and wellbeing.

Empaths spend a lot of time in their heads. Which is great when thoughts are creative, happy or enlightening. But spend too much time around certain people or in certain places, where the energy is low-level, and painful memories, anger or ideas of being wronged can be triggered.

This is why some type of meditation is crucial for the Empath to a) help you recognise when thoughts, you are experiencing, have been triggered by external energy, b) switch off from them, and c) develop the ability to stay grounded and detached.

Some Empaths find meditation difficult to get into because of their creative and over-active minds. But the more busy or chaotic your thoughts, the more you need to still them (also, the more we resist something the more we tend to need it).

An overly cluttered, thought-filled mind will do nothing to help you grow or develop your Empath abilities. Thoughts are addictive and the darker ones can lower your mood faster than anything… When the mind is reset, through meditation, you can switch off or disengage from destructive thoughts much easier.

Perseverance is all that is needed.

Starting with a five-minute practice and then building up will reap incredible benefits.

If your thoughts are keeping you up at night and creating unnecessary worry it is probably a good time to start a practise. Regular meditation helps you detach from thoughts, fact!

Transformation may not happen over night, but it does not take long for you to see how a regular meditation practice is totally transformative and a fast-tracked way to developing greater intuition.

To see what amazing transformations are to be had by practicing meditation, set yourself a four-week challenge and allot an amount of time each day to practice.

I find mornings are easiest.

Perhaps get up ten to twenty minutes earlier and start with five minutes meditation then gradually build up.

If you are on a time limit set a gentle alarm. It is amazing how quickly time goes once you are enveloped in your private mind sanctuary.

(The only time meditation is not recommended is if you are suffering deep depression. A moving meditation, such as Ashtanga yoga, may be more beneficial.

I find the best way to meditate is with an erect spine, either sitting in a straight-backed chair or in a comfy cross-legged or kneeling position on the floor. Keeping the spine straight and upright allows the energy to flow up and down and the breath to be calm.

There are some who will say lying down is a perfectly acceptable way to meditate, which it is, but it is too easy to fall asleep when lying down and the opportunity to consciously quieten the mind is lost. Just make sure you feel comfortable before you start.

If you find meditation difficult it may be a good idea to try a guided meditation. There are hundreds to choose from on YouTube. I have included a couple, just to get you started (using earphones is beneficial with the guided meditations).

Before you start any guided meditation make sure you are compatible with the narrator’s voice. If you do not find the voice soothing then you may get irritated by it during the meditation, which is a distraction. Oh, and make sure you won’t be disturbed.

Surviving Christmas: A Guide for Empaths

tree_2

It is getting ever closer to that dreaded time of year… Christmas!

For some, Christmas is a much loved time. I wish I could make the same claim. For many reasons, the festive season is one my least favourite times of year.

When I was a younger (child to mid-twenties), I loved everything about Christmas. But as the years passed the month of December became harder for me to cope with.

Without fail, every year, at the end of November or beginning of December I would start to feel low and my energy dropped. I would feel as though I was coming down with a bug and would get tense or harassed. Then on or around December 28th I would strangely go back to feeling better.

In my mind I would always find a reason: being extra busy at work, having a busy social life, eating unhealthily, drinking too much alcohol, not having enough sunlight, not doing enough exercise, etc…

Over the years I tried many different approaches to make December more bearable: I made changes to my diet, exercised, stopped going out, stopped drinking alcohol, went on a sunshine breaks… But, no matter what I tried I still felt awful come December.

And then it suddenly dawned on me… what I was feeling wasn’t ‘my stuff’ at all, but everyone else’s.

Clear Negative Energy and Restore Empath Health with Organic Salt

It is said that the ‘father of medicine,’ Hippocrates, was among the first to discover the magical healing qualities of sea salt, after noticing how quickly seawater healed wounded fishermen’s hands.

Salt has been given much bad press over the years and probably for good reason. The refined table salt that most of the Western world has consumed, and which is in all processed foods, is nothing short of toxic to the body. It causes many health problems. But it’s a different story with organic rock or sea salt.

Not only is organic rock or sea salt a great medicinal healer, it is also deeply purifying energetically. It has the power to draw out and dissolve negative energies from the emotional and physical body. This is especially helpful if your day involves interacting with others, where too often, as an Empath, you absorb stressed or anxious energy.

Unrefined salt, from the sea or rock, is an amazing grounding and energy clearing tool that can be safely and effectively used daily, inside and outside the body.

And not just for clearing negative energy: Continue reading

The Incredible Benefits of Garlic for the Empath

We all know that garlic keeps the blood-sucking vampires away, but what about the other type? The energy vampires?

Sadly, it may not be powerful enough to keep the latter away, unless you breathe on them after eating it, but it will certainly counteract any damage they cause, both physically and energetically.

Garlic is not only delicious it is also amazing! Especially when it comes to healing the body. It is a powerful antibiotic, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory, it helps remove heavy metals and contains potent anti-oxidants that help build a healthy immune system.

For the Empath, however, it is what it can do for you energy body that you may find of interest:

11 Essential Oils to Re-Balance the Empath

essential_oilsFor the Empath, having a variety of quick-fix-pick-me-ups is vital for their continuous health and happiness.

After spending time in public places and around draining people, or just when the stresses of life bring us down, the last thing we may want to do is sit in meditation or do energy clearing techniques to realign ourselves.

When affected by the energy of a hectic world, the idea of waving a healing wand to rebalance and recharge is a most appealing idea. And this is where essential oils come in.

Essential oils work like a magical elixir and have many incredible benefits, they are the perfect way for a busy Empath to stay in balance. The oils help still the mind, clear energy, aid restful sleep and return us to a state of equilibrium.

The value of essential oils has been known for more than 6000 years, not only for their amazing healing properties but for their ability to bring balance back to the body and mind, and promote emotional wellbeing.

Essential oils are composed of tiny molecules that are easily penetrated by the body.

When the essences are inhaled through the nose, the cells that line the nasal passages send a message to the limbic system in the brain, via the olfactory senses. These messages then act as instructions for the limbic system.

The limbic system is a part of the brain that controls the major functions of the body and has a huge impact on the emotions and emotional memory (it is also responsible for sparking nostalgia through certain scents). When the limbic system  receive the oil’s message it responds to the request and takes action, whether that be to heal the body, calm the mind or both.

Depending on the oil will depend on the instruction the body gets. For example: with lavender the message will be one of relaxation, if it’s jasmine oil the message will be to promote calm to the body.

The following essential oils are brilliant for the Empath, and have many therapeutic benefits. Not only do they help heal physical ailments but they also work to remove emotional energy held within the body, or within the aura, and act as incredible Empath elixirs.

You can use the oils listed below  in diffusers, room sprays, candles, body and facial oils, on a handkerchief, on your  pillow, and even in your bath. Continue reading

How Can An Empath Stay Protected From Trauma Trigger People?

If you have someone in your life who acts as a trauma trigger, they will no doubt have sprung to mind upon reading the title of this post.

Those who act as a trauma trigger to an Empath, cause a response at the mere mention of their name, and can have them awash with painful emotions, just by thinking about them.

For the Empath, feeling other people’s energy and emotions is normal, both negative and positive.

Some people emit lovely, light vibrations and are a joy to be around. But there are some who live under a cloud of negative energy and are riddled with angsts that they seem to thrive on. These types can act as a trauma trigger.

These ‘trigger’ people tend to spew dark, angry energy  and refuse to accept or change their behaviour, even if it has been pointed out to them how their ways affect others. They tend to find fault in everyone (except themselves) and choose not to see the good in those around them.

10 Ways Empaths can Protect Themselves from Other People’s Energy

pexels-photo-708392.jpegIf you are an Empath you will already know that being in public places can be a traumatizing affair. Simply nipping to the shopping mall can mean you end up ‘wearing’ someone else’s energy for the rest of the day. Which isn’t such a bad thing if the energy is positive and highly charged. But it is mostly the not-so-nice energy that follows you home.

On my journey as an Empath, I have found the best way to stay protected, when out in public places, is to either take pre-emptive measures before leaving home or use energy balancing techniques as and when needed.

As all Empaths are different, what works for one might not work for another. And depending on the circumstances you might need to use different techniques for different situations… or several techniques all at once.

Here are some of the most effective and easy protective techniques you can use before, during or after crowd exposure:

What’s the Deal with Antiques and Empaths?

On my post ‘At a Glance 30 Traits of an Empath’ there is one trait that has caused some controversy over the years and that is:

Trait 28   Will not choose to buy antiques, vintage or second-hand.

Anything that’s been pre-owned carries the energy of the previous owner. An Empath may even prefer to have a brand new car or house (if they are in the financial situation to do so) with no residual energy.

Many people wrongly assume the reason number 28 is on the list is because antiques hold negative energy. Anything pre-owned can carry negative or positive energy but this is not the reason it is on the list. Continue reading

Why Empaths Freeze Around Inauthentic People

lone

Have you ever spent time with someone who on the surface seems as nice as pie, but when with them you feel awful and struggle to form a sentence?

This discomfort is caused by your Empathic antenna sensing all is not what it seems. You are detecting that what this person is showing is a fake persona created to hide something from others.

When an Empath comes across fake people it is common for them to shut down as a form of protection.  This can be seen as stumbling over words or one’s memory and thought process being affected. Anyone who is not emanating truthful vibes will put an Empath on high alert.

How Unbalanced Chakras Weaken the Empath

As an Empath, you will no doubt have heard of the chakras; but you may not know of the importance they play in keeping you happy, healthy and protected from the energy of others.

The chakras are energy centres located along the central energy canal, near the spine, and are in direct correlation with the endocrine system.

Chakras and Their Corresponding Glands

Root or base chakra: adrenals

Sacral chakra: ovaries/testes

Solar plexus chakra: pancreas

Heart chakra: thymus

Throat chakra: thyroid/parathyroids

Third eye chakra: pineal

Crown chakra: pituarity

The word chakra means wheel or circle and can be translated into vortex or whirlpool. The chakras are vortices which controls the energy of the body.

Chakras can be classed as healthy or unhealthy, open, closed, blocked or imbalanced.

If any of the chakras remain permanently open, it can result in physical and energetic vulnerability, and a diminished aura.

A weakened, leaky aura is bad news on many levels for the Empath. It not only allows our energy to leak out but also allows too much energy in, from those we come into contact with.

So, if you are struggling with fatigue, overwhelm and dealing with too much emotional energy, you may have to consider that your chakras are unbalanced and your aura is leaky.

Trinity Healing for The Empath

Anyone who has read many of my posts is probably aware that I’m a big advocate of taking responsibility for self-healing.

When it comes to finding balance and realigning the mind, body and spirit, I believe  we are the ones who are responsible. We must make the changes. It is after all our journey. (Of course I am not talking about serious health conditions, that need medical assistance).

I wasn’t always of this mind. When I was younger, I hoped others would do it for me. I wanted the easy option… I learnt the hard way on that one.

It was over 20 years ago when I started looking for answers to the mysteries of life. And in that time I have made many discoveries. Especially in regard to Empath life!

It took me a while to see it, but although it comes with many challenges, the journey of an Empath is a brilliant fast-paced rollercoaster ride and a true blessing. If it were an easy comfortable trip we would never get to overcome the many obstacles we do. And, in turn, accomplish and learn so much.

We climb mountains, float on clouds and stumble into darkness, sometimes all in one day, and it is these experiences that make the Empath journey so worthwhile.

I have by no means got the answers to life’s mysteries, nor would I yet want to have. We have to leave something to learn on life’s path. However, the most important detail I have realized to date is: we will never find true health, peace or happiness until we heal the trinity of mind, body and spirit.

Mind = thoughts, ego and emotions
Body =  physical vessel
Spirit = the energetic body and higher self or soul

We come as a trinity package and when it comes to healing we generally have to work on all three.

We heal the body and mind through eating the right diet, drinking plenty of water, doing a good amount of exercise, avoiding excess amounts of stress or anything that is harmful to us.

We heal the spirit by living authentically, expressing gratitude, being kind, having a spiritual practice/belief and spending time in nature.

Generally, when the body is in balance the mind and spirit very quickly follows. The biggest cause of physical imbalance is the diet.

It won’t matter if you work out five times a week, or if you have a regular spiritual or meditative practise, if your diet is unsuitable you will be out of balance and you will struggle with Empath life and your trinity will be out of sync.

Eating foods that do not agree with you will weaken your body, disrupt your hormones, cause mental imbalance and contribute to leaky aura (seriously bad news for the Empath ).

I had no idea that what we put in our mouths could have such a harmful effect on our all round physical and mental health, as an Empath, until I changed my diet.

The start of my Empath transformation began in 2012 [see post here ], when I started making changes to what I ate.

By removing certain foods, I found life as an Empath became easier and more enjoyable, and my intuition and happiness increased. I was shocked that the wrong diet had had such a negative impact on me.

If you are an Empath and you have suffered for a long time with niggling health problems like allergies or depression, if you struggle spending time around people, or if you experience crushing fatigue or brain fog look at your diet.

Modern diets and lifestyles have taken too many Empaths and Sensitives down. Putting them out of action without them realizing that their diet is preventing them from becoming all they can be.

If you want to see BIG changes in your life, change your diet!

If you have worked on yourself mentally, spiritually and physically and still suffer bouts of  Empath fatigue, overwhelm, depression or other physical ailments it is time to address what you eat…

Now is the perfect time to make changes, to start living, not just existing, and get doing what you came here to do, and that can be done through healing the trinity of mind, body and spirit.

There is nothing to lose but everything to gain…

2017 Update: If you are interested in changing your Empath life, this book will help you. Or to check your symptoms click on the link: Empath symptoms.

Hope this helps on your journey!

Knowing it’s Time to Let Go of Toxic Friends or Family

pexels-photo-906106.jpeg

Most Empaths have at least one person in their life who cause them to experience negative emotions, just by being in their presence. These people, who may be friends or family members, seem to spew acid when they talk: they complain about everything, appreciate nothing and only look out for their own interests.

It is quite normal for an Empath to experience heightened emotions and feel another’s buried pain, and we want to help others out with their problems when we can, but we are not supposed to be someone’s emotional punch bag or toxic dumping ground.

Toxic people can drain your energy within a matter of minutes of being in their presence, and even self-protection techniques may not work to prevent their dark vibes seeping in.

Typical sensations experienced when with toxic people:

  • Anger or feelings of bitterness: This can last for the duration of being in their presence and up to 10 days after. Depending on their negative traits will depend on what you feel.
  • Fatigue: Struggling to keep your eyes open, especially if they are venting.
  • Being out of sorts: A range of strange feelings wash over you, from being spaced out, to nausea.
  • Negative talk: Finding yourself talking negatively of others, even though it is not a typical trait of yours.
  • Apathy: Losing all previous zest and optimism.

If you have a toxic person in your life, you  may have already tried helping them, by sharing what has helped you in dealing with the rigours of life. Sadly, they did not want to listen and have no intentions of making any changes to themselves, preferring to continue to offload their negative rants on you.

The Empath generally avoids hurting or causing unnecessary pain to others, and it is for this reason many keep in their lives those who cause them unhappiness. Yet, one must always put the emotional health of self first.

If a food or substance made you violently ill, or caused you to feel depressed, you would likely avoid it; the same should be applied to those who cause emotional turmoil.

We have a responsibility to keep our body and mind healthy. If another continually causes stress that we cannot cope with (all stress eventually leads to illness) the only option is to remove them from our life.

I am not talking about having the ego dented by another’s random disrespect. Everyone have people who offend, hurt or make them angry, by their lack of understanding. And we in turn will no doubt, unknowingly, do the same to others. This issue is about those toxic friends, or family members, who repetitively (and often intentionally) bring us down.

pexels-photo-54379.jpeg

The point comes in all toxic friendships when you have to decide if it is causing more harm than good.

Here are some questions to ask that may help you evaluate your friend/relationship and hopefully help you see if it is a healthy one:

  •  Am I taking anything from this friend/relationship?
  • Does spending time with him/her make me happy?
  • Do I dread being in his/her presence?
  • When was the last time I enjoyed being in his/her company?
  • Do we have any of the same interests?
  • Is it a one-sided friendship with me fitting in with his/her needs?
  • Does this relationship affect my emotional health?
  • Do I feel ill, emotionally drained or have intense negative emotions after being with him/her?
  • Am I being used as an emotional dumping ground?
  • Does he/she have a lot of negative thoughts or anger towards me?
  • Am I learning anything from spending time with him/her?
  • Is being in this relationship making me grow spiritually, emotionally or other?
  • Is this relationship beneficial to either of us?
  • Has he/she become dependent upon me?
  • What are my real reasons for staying in this relationship?

There are many reasons we encounter toxic people. A common reason being the Mirror of the Empath. Certain encounters act as a mirror and show us weaknesses or issues we need to resolve within ourselves.

Any undesirable behaviour that repeats, in any type of relationship, is something that needs to be investigated. Repetition highlights flaws or issues that need to be worked on and learnt from.

We all learn from the bad situations presented in life. Yet, if the same emotional scenarios keep playing out, no one is gaining, learning or growing from the situation and it is time to cut the cord.

Once you have learned from an experience you don’t need to re-learn it over and over. You may learn from bad experiences, but you don’t need to keep experiencing other people’s negativity to grow.

This is not about being spiteful or uncaring. You can be grateful for all they have shown you in life and send them love. But when it feels time to let them go, it is.

If you want to learn the secrets of being an Empath, find ways to restructure your life and harness your hidden power, this may be of interest to you.

Hope this helps on your Empath Journey.

Until next time…
